Working from home can be a great option for parents who want to spend more time with their children while also earning a living. However, working from home with a baby can be challenging. Here are some tips to help you balance work and parenting:
Create a Schedule
One of the biggest challenges of working from home with a baby is finding time to work. Create a schedule that includes dedicated work time and baby time. You may need to work early in the morning, during nap time, or after the baby goes to bed. I created a schedule that helps me stay on top of my work while homeschooling a 9, 8, and 2 year old.
Create a Baby Busy Board
When I worked from home, my son loved getting into and destroying my supplies. Instead of scolding him or sending him away from my desk, I went and bought the dollar store brand of my supplies. Although it didn’t keep him occupied during an entire shift, it kept him busy enough to allow me to work on each task before having to tend to him again. It cost me less than $10 to build the board; check it out here.
Get Help
If possible, get help from a partner, family member, or friend. Having someone else watch the baby while you work can help you focus and be more productive. If you trust having a virtual baby sitter that entertains your child on camera, consider checking out Virtual Baby Sitters Club.
Use a Baby Carrier
A baby carrier can be a lifesaver when you need to work and the baby wants to be held. Wearing your baby in a carrier allows you to have your hands free to type or work on the computer. Not only does this soothe your baby, but if you are anything like me, having my baby son beside me soothed my anxiety as well.
Take Breaks
It’s important to take breaks throughout the day to spend time with your baby. Taking short breaks can also help you recharge and be more productive when you return to work. I usually take a break with my baby and cuddle in bed. I turn the timer on so that if I happen to fall asleep, I can resume working once it goes off.
Find a No Phone Job
Working from home with a baby requires flexibility. You may need to adjust your schedule or work style to accommodate your baby’s needs. Remember that it’s okay to take breaks or work at different times than you would in a traditional office setting.
The easiest way to exercise flexibility is to get a no phone work from home job. Jobs such as transcription, bookkeeping, and call rating allows you to work when you want. To see our complete list of 500+ no phone work from home jobs, click here.
